Yeovil District Swimming Club making waves in community and competition

This year, the club has received a significant boost from AVoptics, whose sponsorship has enabled YDSC to sign up one additional assistant coach and six J1/J2 officials. The team has already completed three assistant coach courses, strengthening its ability to provide personalised, high-quality training.

“AVoptics is proud to support the community,” a company spokesperson said. “We’re delighted to help YDSC grow its coaching team so that swimmers can continue to develop and achieve their goals.”

Now home to over 100 members, YDSC supports swimmers at all stages—from beginners to national-level competitors. Training is organised into eight squads, starting with Mini-skills for those finishing their learn-to-swim programme, through to Potential and Performance squads that prepare athletes for county, regional, and national events. Performance swimmers commit to over 11 hours of pool training plus two hours of land-based training weekly. A Masters squad is also available for adults preferring a less competitive approach.

Yeovil District Swimming Club (YDSC) has a rich history stretching back over a century. The Yeovil Men’s Swimming Club was founded in 1889, with its Water Polo team already competing by 1901. The Yeovil Ladies Swimming Club followed in 1908. In 1962, both clubs marked the opening of the Huish pool with a celebratory gala, and in 1974, they officially merged to form YDSC. From the outset, the new club focused on raising swimming standards and building international links, including a notable five-year partnership with French clubs.

During the 1990s, YDSC gained a reputation for hosting one of the biggest Easter open meets in the country at the old Huish pool, attracting up to 1,300 swimmers over a single weekend.

In 2005, the club partnered with Somerset District Council and local organisations to hire its first full-time swimming professional. Current Head Coach Ian Angell took on the role in May 2018 and continues to lead the club today.

The club’s recent competitive success includes 33 swimmers qualifying for the Somerset County Championships, 11 for the Southwest Regionals, and one for the English Nationals. Behind the scenes, more than 35 volunteers—including coaches, poolside assistants, officials, fundraisers, and committee members—keep the club running. Many of these positions require formal training, which can be costly.

A major boost has come from AVoptics, whose sponsorship fund 3 assistant coaches and partly an L2 coach, as increasing their coaching capability has an immediate benefit for the club and their swimmers.

Among those swimmers is S., who joined YDSC two and a half years ago. He now swims over 27,000 metres a week, aiming to emulate his hero, American Olympic legend Michael Phelps. “Without swimming, my life would be disorganised,” S. said. “It’s taught me teamwork, healthy eating, and given me amazing friends.” His mother, Jenny, an assistant coach at the club, added: “I love being involved and supporting each swimmer to succeed. Seeing their progress makes it worth it”, adding that swimming is a good 'tool' for those who might struggle with mental health issues.

Another promising athlete is A., who has been with the club for over three years. She swims around 25,000 metres weekly and has dreamed of competing in the Olympics since childhood. “Swimming has taught me to push my boundaries,” she said. “Life without it would be boring and unorganised.”

Andy, YDSC Chairman, summed up the club’s spirit:

“It’s a privilege to be part of the club, seeing what it means to so many youngsters and how they support each other to be the best they can be.  This club brings families together, and we have a fantastic community feel. With this expanded coaching team, our swimmers get more personalised feedback and the chance to refine their skills in a supportive environment,” said Andy, YDSC Chairman.

With passionate volunteers, dedicated swimmers, and supportive sponsors, YDSC remains a cornerstone of the Yeovil and district community—uniting families, inspiring young athletes, and helping them reach their full potential.
